Not sure how I was supposed to know about this change and not sure why they didn’t have better error messages that would make it more clear on what I was supposed to do. So I deleted the iPhoto download updated iMovie and all was right in the Mac World. I looked around some more and found out that Apple had done away with “iPhoto” and has replaced it with “Photos”.

So after countless tries to update iPhoto and iMovie I finally checked the App Store for iPhoto, but it was nowhere to be found!

I logged in to the App Store to investigate and found an error that said something like “You can not upgrade because the update was not purchased from this account”. While iMovie still worked, it didn’t allow me to add photos because of the El Capitan update. I was not able to upgrade my iPhoto application which subsequently made it difficult to use photos in my iMovie installation.

  • Opened Photos.app which imported the entire iPhoto Library successfully.I, like many people, upgraded to El Capitan and it was great and pretty seamless experience… with the exception of one update.
  • Opened the upgraded iPhoto Library in iPhoto 9.6.1, which reported "This photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." After the upgrade process, all 5,238 items (including albums, metadata, etc) appeared intact!.
  • Ran iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 (which now ran normally intead of returning "Your library can open with the current version of iPhoto and does not need to be prepared with this tool" as above).
  • Copied rebuilt iPhoto Library to new Mac running OS X 10.11.5.
  • RAW images manually imported from My Photo Stream are now editable. Photos can now be exported from Photo Stream using the Export command in the File menu. It also manages to rebuild albums and folders." Photos can now be deleted from My Photo Stream by dragging to the Trash. It starts with a fresh clean library and imports all the photos, including their meta data, such as location, faces, date. But it works differently from Apple’s approach.
